Description
An acrylic painting version of a work symbolically describing my take on how spirituality evolves.
The human being's destiny is inextricably bound to the metaphysical structures of the Cube of Saturn (black square), representing Creation, Being and the Past, the double cross of Psychic Deconstruction (the middle) representing the unveiling/revealing/
unboxing of the Cube, and finally the Sphere of Sol (sun, white circle) representing the Uncreated (non-Being), the Oneness of Reality and the Future.
The double cross, then, represents the Eternal Present, where the Past represents Fact and the Future, Possibility. There is a double cross (the key) rather than a single one because the Psyche (containing both Mind and Body) is dual in its operational mode--common reality seems to be constructed of separate, mirror-like objects, deluding us into considering the world around us as a collection of fragments, all perceived from an observer to an observed. Also, the double cross implies that the intersection of the Mind/idealism/metaphysics/consciousness, represented by the upper cross, and the Body/materialism/pragmatism/unconsciousness, represented by the inverted cross, is the key to spiritual work. Interestingly, the double cross also resembles an old European door key, the Buddhist vajra symbol and the thunderbolt weapon of the Greek Zeus, which are acknowledged as symbols of transformation. The entire work of square, double cross and circle can be seen to be a representation of all-that-is, paralleling the Sadasat-Tatparam Yat of the Hindu Bhagavad-Gita.
In short, the aim of human life is to focus on a Present that metaphysically incorporates the Past and the Future. Indeed that is our lot, possessing memory and foresight. But a difference in effect occurs according to our focus and its range. And this is what separates ignorance from enlightenment. If we focus too much on the dual unfolded squares (the manifest object drawing attention), we fall into nostalgia and an objective bias. If we focus too much on the empty background (the context which supports through contrast the focal object), we fall into unrealized hope and subjectivity. But if both object and context are brought together so that a creative resonance occurs (a healthy Gestalt), meaning, knowledge and new realization arises. That is symbolized by the conjunction of the small white square and circle, from which emanates a third force, the Transcendent Image, or Universal Archetype. Right focus expands awareness. The degree to which we can identify and demonstrate the Transcendent Image in any human endeavor is the measure of our true understanding of Reality. For the artist, widely defined, it demonstrates his/her ability to serve as a medium of Spirit.
Piece completed in June 2015. The background is also painted in acrylics. The original is not for sale.
