The central figure is Vanity personified. It (could be male or female) wears a wide hat that both protects the figure (from the sun of awareness) and attracts others. Vanity's agenda is to increase pleasurable sensation without sacrificing any other aspect of itself or giving anything. In doing so, it continually bolsers its ego and pride. Therefore it reaches out, via its appendages, to the figure on the left, expecting it to respond. It is especially attracted to figures without hats since those types do not require protection (psychologically, defensive mechanisms) and have therefore risen above Vanity's state. To the right of Vanity lies vague memories of its past--not clear but just in the realm of feeling, esp. pleasurable memories. Painful memories are suppressed.
All figures are separated from each other, since from Vanity's perspective, everything is an object to be manipulated, and therefore there can never be a true union with another. The entire assembly is bound together by the ropes of cause and effect, which inevitably result in cycles of drama and illusion.
