Abstract art that has an objective referent, which is not immediately apparent. It often refers to the "essence", theme, category, or concept of a psychological, spiritual, social or environmental object, experience or event. Thus, it intentionally leads the viewer to the topic via the viewer's subconscious. It does not directly refer to general concepts, feelings or emotions but should evoke them. A topical abstract may be figurative or non-figurative, or appear entirely expressive. The referent may be elicited by the title of the work. This collection specifically does not include photographic abstracts. It also does not include works that are only moderately abstracted, such as impressionistic works.
